Armed Forces

Statement of support

“The Armed Forces are committed to supporting the ‘Backing Young Britain’ campaign. Britain’s youth are the future of the best Armed Forces in the world.

For this reason the Armed Forces run programmes of a broad range of educational and outreach activities across the UK at the invitation of schools. This involvement aims to inform young people of the roles and responsibilities of the Armed Forces, their place in society and the diversity of career opportunities that are available.

The Armed Forces are committed to recruiting from the widest possible sectors of society, and recognise the importance of using technology and media that appeal to Britain’s young people.

Not everyone knows what they want to do in life, and the Armed Forces aim to maximise the potential of all recruits through work experience placements and taster visits to service establishments, personal development courses and Look at Life courses. For those who want something more technically challenging, the Armed Forces currently offer a range of apprenticeships (8,400 completed every year). Furthermore, the MOD has also invested in a purpose-built residential college at Welbeck, which offers a programme of personal, physical and intellectual development, providing students with a rounded education specifically designed to meet the needs of today’s modern technical Armed Forces. The Armed Forces also offer a range of merit based entry routes which sponsor young people through A-level and university education. Graduates normally, but not exclusively, enter the Armed Forces as officers and will undergo officer training with extensive leadership and management training. Sponsorship for study at university is available for successful applicants.

The Armed Forces’ commitment to Britain’s youth continues throughout their military service. We believe in continual development, and serving sailors, soldiers and airmen or woman, are encouraged to undertake nationally recognised qualifications, such as non vocational qualifications, modern apprenticeships and foundation degrees, which ensure that the skills gained in service are transferable to the wider national skills pool, by returning highly trained ex-Service personnel into the labour market.

Britain’s youth are our future; the Armed Forces see the potential in people and aim to maximise their aspirations and capabilities.”
