On 14 January 2010 the Backing Young Britain campaign hosted an live online webcast for SMEs from the public, private and third sector as well as for young people eager to learn how to map their future careers.
The event focused on internships, Apprenticeships and Local Employment Partnerships (LEPs) and gave viewers practical advice on how they could make Backing Young Britain work for them.
The exclusive webcast was hosted by the first ever winner of The Apprentice, Tim Campbell, along with special guests including the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Yvette Cooper, and John Wright, National Chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses.
A live audience made up of representatives from a range of businesses and organisations took part in the lively discussion, and following the webcast, there were two web chats to continue the discussion. One was for businesses and organisations, the other for young people.
During the webcast, Yvette Cooper called on more British businesses to Back Young Britain:
“We are determined to do everything we can to help the next generation of young people get ahead. If every one of the two million businesses across the UK could offer one single job, Apprenticeship or training opportunity to a young person, then we could make a real difference and help young people get that all important first foot on the career ladder,” she said.
John Wright explained how Apprenticeships could make small businesses stronger:
“Apprenticeships are vital for fostering skills they can help make small businesses stronger and better equipped to survive the recession and help the economy recover. Research shows that one in four graduates are subsequently offered fulltime employment – a win-win for both the business and the graduate.”
